Partners
Charlestown Sports Collaboration: Going into its second summer, the Charlestown Sports Collaboration was formed to give the heads of every youth sports organization a forum to discuss issues ranging from scheduling conflicts to recruitment and new programs. This collaboration has been very helpful for our program and the community.
Sport in Society: Northeastern University’s Sport in Society continues to be a premier partner with CLLC. Each week from September to May, students have the honor of working with Division I athletes from Northeastern on homework, in reading groups and healthy cooking classes. These athletes give over twenty hours of volunteer service to the community each week.
Mass General Hospital Charlestown Clinic: The Pediatrics Department at the Charlestown Clinic refers patients through the onsite Sport in Society staff member to help educate and engage patients that are diagnosed as obese or at risk of being obese. This staff member and the CLLC staff work closely together to engage these patients in the Healthy Cooking Program and youth sports in Charlestown.
Boys and Girls Club of Charlestown: The Club will always be a place for children to go to after school to burn off energy, learn and socialize. The Board of Directors and staff of CLLC understand the importance of working with the Club to ensure the best interest of the community members. This includes communicating about programs to ensure schedules don’t conflict, programs aren’t being duplicated and every student knows what programs are being offered. This relationship is critical to the success of our programs and the efficiency of our staff.
Charlestown Against Drugs: Unfortunately, illegal drugs continue to be a trap for our students and athletes. By working with CHAD, we continue to educate our players about this trap: how to avoid it and what to do if the student or a friend needs help. No matter the student’s background or address, the threat of drugs is ever present. This education is critical to the success of our entire community, not just the individual.
Charlestown Substance Abuse Coalitition: CSAC, a program out of the MGH Center for Community Health Improvement, is a community-based organization that works collaboratively with neighborhood agencies to effectively treat and prevent substance abuse among our youth and their families. CSAC supports and promotes CLLC's provision of positive activities and learning opportunities. CSAC funded training for and worked with CLLC and Northeastern University's Sports and Society to create and run the Charlestown Summer Sports Challenge in 2007. Lastly, CSAC has created promotional tools for CLLC so that all of the youth of Charlestown are aware of and can take advantage of the wonderful opportunities available to them.
Charlestown Working Theater: Charlestown Working Theater and CLLC have partnered to fund, support and manage a Chess Club that meets on Friday afternoons. This class allows players to work on critical thinking and learn a new skill that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. The partnership with the Working Theater is incredibly important as it is an opportunity to expose students to a resource and culture that may never otherwise present itself.
Warren-Prescott School: Warren-Prescott faculty and staff are in constant contact with CLLC staff to help target students that are in need of extra help. This partnership has helped students bring grades from a failing level to a passing one. We also work with the eighth grade math and science teachers to ensure students understand the material and stay on task. This partnership is a model of how to share information to benefit the student.
